Insomnia - A to Z of Hypnotherapy

January 20, 2020

Insomnia is officially defined as having difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for a period of 3 months or more, however if you’ve been struggling with your sleep for anything over a few days, you will know of the impact that it can have on your life. It’s so common that it’s the world’s most common sleep disorder.

Lack of sleep affects every area of your life from your health, finances, happiness and your relationships and studies have constantly shown that it can lead to anxiety, weight gain and depression. If you think about it, when you are tired, you generally are more stressed, more irritable and let able to cope with life.

It’s recommended that an adult should get 7 to 8 hours sleep per night and cutting this short can have serious consequences.  It may surprise you but being awake for just 16 hours decreases your cognitive performance to the same extent as if your blood alcohol level of 0.05%, which is just below the drink drive limit.

So, there are things that you can do to help drift off into a restful night’s slumber. Try and keep away from your screens for at least an hour before bedtime as the light from them affects the production of your sleep inducing hormone, Melatonin, and try to give yourself time to wind down before going to bed as the brain needs to off load and if you don’t, it will take the time to do as soon as your rest your head on the pillow.

Hypnotherapy has been shown to significantly improve sleep disorders like insomnia as it both relaxes the mind and deals with the stress and anxiety that often cause the sleeplessness. Here Lee from Peacehaven shares his story of how hypnotherapy helped him to get a restful night of sleep again.
