Frequently Asked Questions.
In this section, we hope to answer any questions that you may have and if you can't find the answer you need then please feel free to get in touch (contact details at the bottom of the page).
Is everything I say to you confidential?
Yes. Everything is 100% confidential. It is important that you feel that you are able to talk freely and openly, so anything that is said during a session will be strictly private.
Can everybody go into trance?
Yes. Whilst some people find it easier than others to relax, we can all go into a trance. If you think about it, you probably do it naturally every day when driving your car or watching TV, we will just utilise that state to quieten your busy mind and give you space to focus on the changes you want to make.
How many sessions will I need?
Although every individual makes change at their own pace, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy tends to work fairly quickly with most people seeing a change after just 1 or 2 sessions and we would, on average, expect to see someone for approximately 6-10 sessions. For smoking, you will only need 1 (2HR) session and for phobias, you will only need 3.
How quickly will I see results?
Most people start to notice improvements within the first couple of weeks, with many people starting to see changes after just the free consultation.
Do I have to re-live the things that are causing me problems or talk about past trauma?
Absolutely not, in fact, we will actively discourage you from doing so. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process that has evolved thanks to modern developments in technology and neuroscientific research. We understand so much more now about the workings of the brain, why visualisations and trance are so effective to create change and why we don't need to re-live trauma and delve into problems to move forward. During the initial consultation we will explain the science behind your individual concern(s) in an easily digestible way, so you will feel fully informed and understand for yourself why solution focused therapists work in this way.
Can I have hypnotherapy if I’m on anti-depressants or other medication?
Yes, in fact, hypnotherapy complements them. Anti-depressants work by keeping the pleasure receptors in your brain open for longer to allow them to receive more of the happiness chemical, serotonin and our style of hypnotherapy significantly helps your body to create more serotonin.
How do you put somebody into trace?
You'll be pleased to know that there's no watching a pendulum as you may have seen on TV. You will simply be guided by the use of relaxing music and voice into a relaxing visualisation.
Will you have control of my mind and will you be able to make me do things?
No, once you are really relaxed in trance you will still be in full control. Some people have the mis-conception that you are asleep or un-conscious during hypnosis however this is misguided and some people even prefer to keep their eyes open and look around the space.
What does Hypnosis/trance feel like?
You will feel deeply relaxed. Some people often describe it as being like the feeling you get just before you drift off into a nice comfortable sleep.
Are there any risks to hypnotherapy?
No. You are in control throughout the whole process and if there was anything in the stories or visualisations we use that didn't resonate with you then your mind would just ignore it.
How long does a session last?
Each session lasts an hour, half of which is solution focused talk therapy and the other half is hypnosis.
Is hypnotherapy safe for children?
Yes. More and more we are hearing of children suffering from stress, depression and anxiety and solution focused hypnotherapy is very effective in these areas and Hypnotherapy Change Works is in partnership with The Youth Fairy who specialises in working with children and teenagers.
